The goal: Honour outstanding digital retail projects

In its 11th year the Digital Retail Award honors efficiently planned and creatively implemented innovative and successful digital communication and digital signage projects with a focus on retail, brand and trade communication and presents them to a wider audience within the industry.

The goal is to widen the acceptance of the digital medium and to be a platform for manufacturer and agencies to present their projects.

The public presentation is also intended to stimulate ideas for new projects. The Digital Retail Award honors well-conceived digital projects which, right from the initial design stage through to placement, selection, design and control of the displays, achieve their defined goal. The awards focus on retail communication - in the store, out of home and on the customer journey. In a new category the innovative startup idea is awarded.

The Digital Retail Award with its special retail focus is unique in Germany. 

Promoter and organizer
The organizer of the Digital Retail Award is Reed Exhibitions Deutschland GmbH, Völklinger Straße 4, 40219 Düsseldorf, Germany. Reed Exhibitions Deutschland GmbH is also the organizer of the viscom - Europeanl Trade Fair for Visual Communication. The Digital Retail Award is presented in conjunction with Forteam Kommunikation GmbH.

The Digital Retail Award goes back to Thomas Dockter who invented and organized the awards for the first time in 2007 in cooperation with Reed Exhibitions at the viscom show. In 2014, after the death of Thomas Dockter, Forteam Kommunikation has taken over the organization with the goal to continue the work the way its founder intended.

During viscom düsseldorf 2017 the Digital Retail Award takes place for the eleventh time.

All manufacturers, service and retail companies, agencies and integrators are entitled to submit entries. Entries can only be submitted by both the client and the contractor together. It is irrelevant, however, what role the contractor has played in the project. Each project can only be entered once. However, an unlimited number of projects can be submitted per contractor/client. By entering, participants affirm that they can provide proof, on demand, that they are in possession of all the necessary rights on the project and have the consent of all partners involved.

Conditions of participation
Categories Instore, DOOH & Customer Journey: All digital retail projects that have not yet participated in this award and with the majority of work completed (minimum rollout 80%) by 30 September 2017 can be entered.

Category Startup idea: All ideas for digital retail projects of a startup, not older than three years and with less than 10 employees can praticipate in this category. The winners in this category will be offered a free participation in the StartupCity at the Startupcon 2018 and 4 tickets for the 2018 conference.

The application for the first round is free of charge for all participants. In case of a nomination for the final round  the presentation fee is as follows: 

Early Bird entry until 30 June 2017: EUR 250,00 plus VAT.
Regular entry from 1 July 2017: EUR 380,00 plus VAT.

- Presentation of the nominated project on a wide format digital screen during the duration of the viscom show

With your entry to the award you commit to present the project in case of nomination for the final round for the entry fee mentioned above.

Jury Constellation
The constellation of the jury is composed similar to the prospectives in an actual digital project. Besides of technical expertise and the view from an agency- and network-perspective are also aspects like creation, architecture and press/PR relevant. Further the jury consists of experts for the particular application areas for digital solutions. A winner of last year also supports the jury.

Evaluation criteria
The jury will examine the interplay of content and technology while taking the integration of design, project setting and communication target fulfillment into consideration. 

The jury work is based on the following central questions:
- Which tasks underlay the customer briefing and how was the mission accomplished?
- How are displays/media integrated in the environment and in the interior design?
- Which communicative effect does the integrated technology achieve? 

Concept and realization account for half of the voting. The other half is divided up equally on technology and design of the project.

Voting and Nomination
The jury will vote independently in advance to the jury meeting on the basis of the submitted documents. In each category each project will be awarded with 1, 2 or 3 points. The projects with the highest count will be nominated for the Digital Retail Award. A maximum of 10 projects will be awarded in each category. In case of a tie count the shortlist can be extended accordingly.

Jury meeting and selection of the winners
The jurors get together in a non public jury meeting. Each nominated project will be presented in chronological category order and on the basis of all submitted documents. Before the voting starts each project will be given extensive room for discussion and evaluation. The voting should be agreed unanimously. Abstentions are possible. After the selection procedure for the award of prizes in the regular categories, the jury evaluates on awarding the category special price.

Awards Ceremony
The honoring of the finalists and the overall winner in the categories will be announced on the evening of the first day of the event, 18 October 2017 at the Digital Retail Night, a public evening reception.
